Terms of Use

What this site is

State Line Move is an independent, reader-funded reference about the administrative steps that follow a move between US states — transferring a driver's licence, retitling and registering a vehicle, proving residency, changing an address, and moving insurance and utility accounts.

It is written and published by one person. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any state Department of Motor Vehicles, department of revenue, secretary of state, insurance department, the United States Postal Service, or any other government agency. It is not affiliated with any moving company, insurer, utility provider, or licence-renewal service, and it does not process applications, submit forms, or act as an intermediary in any transaction with a government body. Any state agency named here is named because a rule or document originates with it, not because it has any relationship with this site.

No professional advice

Content here is general information, not professional advice.

In particular, nothing on this site is legal advice on your residency or domicile, tax advice on which state you owe a return to or how to allocate income between two states, advice on which insurance policy or coverage limit to buy, or an authoritative statement of your obligations under any state's law. Deadlines and requirements described here depend on facts specific to you — when you took up residence, whether you are a student or on military orders, whether the vehicle is leased or financed, and which two states are involved. For a decision that carries real consequences, confirm it directly with the relevant state agency, or with a lawyer, tax professional, or licensed insurance agent in the state concerned.

Accuracy and currency

Guides are researched against official sources and dated on publication. Even so:

  • State deadlines, fee schedules, accepted proof-of-residency documents, inspection requirements, and insurance minimums are changed by legislatures and agencies regularly, often at the start of a fiscal or calendar year, and sometimes without a public announcement.
  • A guide reflects the situation at the date shown on it, not necessarily today.
  • Errors happen.

No warranty is given that content is accurate, complete, or current. If you find something wrong, please report it via the contact page — corrections are made promptly.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site owner is not liable for any loss, cost, delay, or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, anything published here — including missed deadlines, rejected applications, or expenses incurred by following a guide. You use this information at your own risk.
