Vehicle Registration Cost Calculator

Registering a car in a new state is usually a modest bill, with one exception that is not: some states charge a use tax on the vehicle's value when it first enters, with credit for sales tax you already paid elsewhere.

If you bought the car recently in a low-tax state and moved to a high-tax one, the difference is payable, and it can run into thousands.

The rule that catches recent buyers

Several states waive use tax if you owned the vehicle for a set period — often six or twelve months — before moving. Buy a car two months before relocating and you can owe the full difference; buy it a year earlier and you may owe nothing.

If your move is planned and a car purchase is coming, the order of those two events is worth thousands.

Bring more paperwork than you think

Title, current registration, proof of insurance in the new state, proof of address, odometer reading, and the bill of sale showing tax paid. A missing bill of sale is the usual reason someone is sent home to come back tomorrow.
